The L series of Toshiba Satellite laptops were Toshiba's mainstream consumer line of Satellite laptops and were marketed towards students.[1] The L305 specifically was released in 2009.

Collection Specifics

My specific Satellite L305 is the S5944 model which has a dual core, 2008 Intel Pentium with 2 GB of DDR2 memory and Intel integrated graphics. I bought this laptop for $20 from a Deseret Industries thrift store in Marana, AZ on March 18, 2023.

Operating System

This specific laptop came with Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit. When I bought the laptop, the original operating system installation was on the drive, so I used Toshiba's built-in recovery DVD creator to make recovery discs for it. I immediately swapped out the original hard drive for a solid-state drive for improved performance and reinstalled the factory OS installation with the recovery discs that were created.

On June 28, 2023 I installed Linux Mint 21.1 on this laptop since Windows Vista refused to update after updating to a certain point and it informs me on my WSUS server about the device not being up-to-date which kind of bugged me, so I went to Linux instead. This is the first laptop I've installed Linux on and I use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot for my Nintendo DSi since the DSi doesn't support modern Wi-Fi security standards.

Hardware

The only upgrade I've done to this laptop is upgrading the original hard drive to a 240 GB Crucial BX500 SSD.
