The Dell XPS M1210 is a high-end, ultra-portable laptop. At the time of its release, it was a very fast and high performing laptop, based on a review I found of it.[1] For its starting price of $1,199, it makes sense that it would perform well. The XPS M1210's outer shell is constructed of a combination of magnesium alloys and high-quality plastics and is very small compared to the other XPS models of the time.
Collection Specifics
My specific XPS M1210 has a 1.83 GHz Intel Centrino Duo T5600 (laptop-branded Core 2 Duo basically). It also has 1 GB of 533 MHz, DDR2 memory and has the upgraded spec NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 instead of the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics. I bought this laptop for $30 + $11.50 shipping from Mercari on May 29, 2021.
Operating System
This laptop originally shipped with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. When I received the laptop, I installed a Dell OEM version of Vista Home Premium. On January 19, 2023, I switched to 64-bit Windows Vista Business when I swapped out the hard drive for a SSD.
Hardware
There is a somewhat common issue that appears to be plaguing these laptops with the NVIDIA graphics upgrade. Many laptops with the GeForce Go 7400 have experienced the graphics chip failing, which was the case with this laptop originally. In order to fix the problem, the entire motherboard needs to be replaced, so I did that in order to get the laptop fully working again. I replaced it with an identical, but refurbished board, with the GeForce Go 7400 chip since the better graphics performance is nice.
When I originally got this laptop there was also no hard drive installed, so I used a spare hard drive I had laying around. This was not the best idea because it made the laptop very sluggish to use. It took me 2 years, but I finally replaced it with a TEAMGROUP SSD.
